Enhance Your Pregnancy with Essential Oil

Enhance Your Pregnancy with Essential Oil

Pregnancy, although beautiful and exciting can also be quite overwhelming to both the body and the mind. Essential oils provide a beautiful calming natural alternative therapy, assisting to ease and comfort both mother and baby during their pregnancy and childbirth.

Medicine from Mother Nature herself, essential oils not only have pleasant scents, but they also contain therapeutic chemicals that can affect your entire wellbeing when you inhale or absorb them through your skin. The beneficial effects of essential oils are wide-ranging and include balancing hormones, boosting immunity, reducing stress and anxiety, and alleviating aches and pains.

Essential oils can be a controversial topic when it comes to pregnancy, however, my first-hand experience has helped me believe that when used appropriately and responsibly, essentials oils can be relieving and relaxing during stressful times, and can be a safe natural option before resorting to taking harsher medications or therapies.

First Trimester

Although safe to do so during the rest of the pregnancy, it’s suggested that the use of oils applied directly to the body should be avoided in the first trimester. As your hormone-filled body is ultra-sensitive during pregnancy, it is important to take extra care in everything you put in and onto your body during this early phase of growth. Oils at this time are the safest inhaled, either directly or diffused /sprayed.

Avoid clary sage, sage, wintergreen, parsley, camphor, aniseed.

Recommended during this time: peppermint, lavender, lemon, mandarin, frankincense, ylang-ylang, chamomile, ginger.

Tip: Ease your morning sickness and nausea with a whiff of lemon, peppermint, ginger or lavender oil straight from the bottle or on a tissue.

Second and Third Trimester

There are plenty of heavenly scented and safe essential oils that you can use during this time. Oils can be inhaled, consumed or topically applied.

Avoid clary sage, sage, wintergreen, parsley, camphor, aniseed.

Safe to use: Lavender, bergamot, ylang-ylang, roman/german chamomile, patchouli, orange, sandalwood and eucalyptus, grapefruit, juniper (the list is expansive).

Tip: Dilute with carrier oils such as coconut or sweet almond for a relaxing massage or add a couple of drops of lavender, chamomile or whatever you feel you need at the time to relax and unwind. Your skin will absorb the essential oils while you lie back and inhale the vapour.

Use neroli, lavender or ginger essential oil to calm symptoms of heartburn.

Enjoy better quality sleep with the aid of lavender essential oil dabbed on a tissue under your pillow.

Labour and birthing

Whilst preparing your hospital bag, pack a portable diffuser so that you can benefit from aromatherapy while you’re in labour.

Now is a great time for clary sage.

Tip: Diffuse lavender, clary sage and roman chamomile to help with relaxation and inducing of contractions.

To help ease back pain/ contractions prepare a hot or cold compress with a few drops of frankincense added to it.

Try chamomile, lavender, mandarin, ginger or frankincense to relax you and to boost contractions.

Just like everything in your pregnancy and birthing experience, it all comes down to personal choice. If you feel this is something that you would like to incorporate into yours, I wholeheartedly encourage you to give them a try! I used them from the very beginning for morning sickness and fatigue right through to the labour and delivery! I loved every part of my birthing experience and essential oils played a big part in that.

Have you decided you’re too old for some activities, regardless of your age? Do you look in the mirror and criticise your body, not for your body shape, but your age? In the past five years...

They say diamonds are a girl's best friend. Admittedly, they are gorgeous... But give me an Amethyst or Rose quartz any day! Before I even knew the full story of crystals and how/why they worked...
